Episode 13: America’s Forests in Maine

America’s Forests with Chuck Leavell celebrates our nation’s woodlands. On this episode, Chuck travels to Maine, a state with a long and storied relationship with the mighty forests here. He visits conservation organizations that are actively engaged in logging to keep woodlands healthy. Chuck joins native Wabanaki as they harvest an Ash tree for the long tradition of basketmaking. Chuck tries his hand at making a canoe paddle. He learns about what it takes to become a certified master logger and why for centuries, lumber companies here have taken ‘the long view’ in harvesting the state’s premiere tree, the White Pine. Chuck finishes up at the Vic Firth drumstick factory where he honors his friend by learning what goes into making the signature Charlie Watts stick.

America’s Forests captures the breadth of our nation’s woodlands – both public and private. We feature different stories that demonstrate how #forest habitats are to the well-being and economic health of communities across the country. In this series, we present individuals who embody this passion for the woods, from architects to artists, from climbers to carpenters, and from #foresters to #treefarmers.

We celebrate US forests and to advocate for their constructive management, we propose a communications campaign centered on a broadcast television documentary series for PBS and multi-faceted social media outreach.
